 For this series, I was heavily influenced by various ancient cultures and
their rituals. Rituals ranging anywhere from important events, religious
ceremonies, or recreational events. One of the most eye-catching pieces
worn during these rituals is the headdress. The headdress in most
ancient cultures is the single most symbolic piece of attire worn during
these rituals. It allows the wearer to be taken over by the spirit that is
represented by the headdress, or draws power from the deity or creature
it represents. Along with the historical context, I was also influenced by
fantasy, and fantasy based creatures. I wanted to create a piece that
looks like it could have come straight off the pages of one of the great
fantasy epics.

For my headdress piece, I really wanted a strong silhouette. I also
experimented with movement, mass, fabric, and stature. Bringing all
these elements together lead me to create fanciful pieces. I continued
with the addition of horns; many imposing and wondrous animals in the
world are adorned with horns. After the horns were detailed, I wanted to
adorn the headdress with many other types of natural elements, such as
braided faux-furs, flowers, beads, feathers, shells, and more. These
additional pieces help build extra volume to the piece. The dangling and
flowing pieces create an illusionistic perception of a being taking form
when the piece is worn. This helps the fantasy element come to life.
